People always talk about equity, about equal opportunities for everyone, but then little is actually brought home. Well, we at MEHITS this year have planted the first seed for a change that is still long in coming, but in which we believe very much: working together with the University of Padua, we have created a study award dedicated to women who have undertaken STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) studies, in honor of a dear colleague of ours who passed away a few years ago, Margherita Novello.
After the announcement came out in June 2023, during the Christmas party we finally had the pleasure of handing over these scholarships won by 4 female graduate students in STEM fields from the University of Padua, a moment that was then followed by a touching speech by Margherita’s husband, Enrico.
And you will say, what’s the big deal? Well, according to the professors present at the ceremony, the creation of STEM study awards was a gesture of great value and significance. Recognizing and rewarding the efforts and merit of female students is an important step toward equity and inspiration for future generations. These awards are a step forward for gender equity in STEM and provide tangible recognition for female students who excel in their academic pursuits.
The four female students who received the award of €2,500 each will have the opportunity to use this scholarship to pursue their academic and professional goals. Margherita, we are sure, will certainly be proud to see her name associated with such a positive and meaningful initiative.
We hope that these young women will continue to inspire and guide the future of research and innovation. Best of luck to the award-winning students and to all those who continue to work hard in education and research!
